Armenia's Environmental Protection and Mining Inspectorate has launched a two-week investigation into the operations of the Zangezur Copper Molybdenum Combine (ZCMC) based in the southern town of Kajaran in Syunik Province.
The investigation comes on the heels of administrative proceedings against the company for dumping tailings waste into the Norashenik River.
In May, newly elected Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan ordered that the operations of 28 mining companies in the country be investigated.
The inspectorate first inspected the Amulsar mine.
Note also that Armenia's Ministry of Nature Protection reports that an international team of experts from the ELARD Group have arrived in Armenia to conduct an independent survey of the controversial Amulsar gold mine.
Amulsar opponents have halted construction at the mine site, and the Armenian government finds itself in a precarious legal position regarding the mine's future.
Activists opposing Amulsar gold mine over health concerns urge government to speed up mine inspections and to find a prompt solution to stop the catastrophic situation.
Previously, on Tuesday ELARED group met representatives from Develop Armenia and discussed some crucial topics in the country such as energy status, sustainable energy progress, solid waste management solution...
