Several of the most populous US states reported daily deaths that were close to record highs or among the highest in months.

The latest numbers came after California, the most populous US state, announced a record daily number of deaths today and after the US reported more than 3,000 coronavirus deaths in a single day for the first time on Wednesday.

Texas reported an additional 244 deaths. That was fewer than Wednesday's 273 deaths, making it the largest one-day tally since mid-August.

The state, which ranks second in the U.S. by population, as well as coronavirus cases and deaths, also reported 12,211 new Covid-19 infections, which is slightly above its 7-day average, according to the Department of Health. Authorities uncovered another 335 older cases that weren't added to the daily toll.

Florida attributed an additional 135 deaths to the coronavirus, up from 89 on Wednesday. It was the largest daily death toll since the 144 deaths reported on October 15 and excluding October 22, when 162 deaths were reported over a two-day period.

The third largest state also reported an additional 11,335 coronavirus cases, the largest increase in a day since late July, taking into account times when multiple days of data were delivered with a hit.

New York, the fourth largest state, reported another 92 deaths. That was less than 92 on Wednesday, which was the largest in a single day since late May.

The number of hospitalizations in the state was 5,164, the first time since May 21, more than 5,000 – and most -. Cases in the state rose by 10,178.

Pennsylvania attributed 248 deaths to the coronavirus, the largest daily number since May 14. Cases in the fifth largest state rose by 11,972, a daily number that was only second after 12,884 infections last Saturday.

Illinois reported an additional 196 deaths. This is the third largest daily balance ever recorded, compared to a high of 238 on December 2, according to the Health Department. The sixth largest populous state recorded an additional 11,101 cases on Thursday, the most since December 1.
