The LabCorp COVID-19 check package has simply been accredited for over-the-counter sale

LabCorp According to a statement from the company, it is now the first to be approved to sell its COVID-19 test kit over the counter without a prescription.

LabCorp, one of the largest diagnostic testing companies in the United States, could be a major competitor to companies like EverlyWell, which received approval for their home test kits in May. MyLab Box, which earlier this week announced a partnership with Walmart to sell COVID-19 test kits with the giant retailer; or LetsGetChecked, which has its own test at home.

In fact, LabCorp was the first company to receive FDA approval for its test kit. Now the company can sell the product without a prescription through retail channels.

"With the first over-the-counter home pickup kit ever approved by the FDA for COVID-19, we're empowering people to learn more about their health and make safe choices," said Dr. Brian Caveney, Chief Medical Officer and President of LabCorp Diagnostics in a statement. "With this approval, we can help more people get tested, reduce the spread of the virus, and improve the health of our communities."

It's pretty undeniable that anything that reduces consumer friction when testing for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is a good thing. This is also in line with a broader drive to improve consumer access to health care in order to reduce costs.

When customers purchase the COVID-19 test kit, they register the kit on the company's website and then follow the instructions there. Test results are made available through a company portal and a health care provider is available to customers who test positive on how to proceed with treatment.

The company said its kit should not be viewed as a substitute for visits to a healthcare professional and is intended for adults aged 18 and over.

It is important to note that the LabCorp PCR test has not been approved or approved by the FDA and is subject to emergency clearance.
