Amid an ongoing Covid-19 pandemic with many nations struggling with their response, WHO has decided to focus its efforts on tackling climate change.

Climate change and health

Messaging for COP26

A call to action for the health community

In November 2021, the UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).

The science is clear: we urgently need to take action to respond to the threat of climate change, to limit warming to 1.5 degrees, adapt effectively and increase our resilience

The UK is keen to unlock the potential of the Paris Agreement by enabling a balanced outcome that will accelerate climate action, allow for greater ambition and move the process forward

The UK is also looking to bring governments, business and civil society together to accelerate progress common challenges of climate change: Adaptation & resilience, energy transition, nature, clean traffic and finance. This information package shows the health benefits of interventions in these areas

Public health motives for action have a strong scientific basis and are well documented and compelling

We can face the challenge Working together will encourage greater action in our countries, sectors and professions to ensure that the need to protect public health by combating climate change is fully recognized and implemented

A turning point for our planet and our health

COVID-19 has put the fragile relationship between society, economy and health at the center. We owe it to future generations to build on our recovery solid foundations

The last year has also shown the need for resilient health and social care systemsas well as renewed focus and public support for global health priorities

The document is the usual tired UN tropes for renewable energy. Accept the recommendation to burn less fossil fuels.

Energy transition and health

Global emissions from coal make up ~ 45% of total CO2 emissions and are the most polluting energy source. The transition to renewable energy is underway and the market is moving fast, but the Transition needs to be accelerated to heat up well below 2 ° C

Burning fewer fossil fuels reduces pollution and offers immediate and local benefits to society and the economy

Healthcare professionals can support the campaign by:

Growing awareness to governments and the public about the health effects of coal power and other fossil fuels;
advocate for phasing out coal and introducing renewable energy sources, which also help reduce human exposure to air pollution, and Joined the Powering Past Coal Alliance
