Unfold launches light-weight, link-centric profiles referred to as Bio Websites

Unfold, the social media startup that Squarespace acquired last year, is releasing a new tool that allows users to share any links that are important to them.

This is the first step in unfolding has gone beyond its story format authoring tools. Co-founder Andy McCune told me the team now has a bigger vision – just like Squarespace Unfold is "the all-in-one platform for your web presence" and wants to become "the all-in-one platform for your social presence".

"We both play in very saturated rooms with a lot of competitors," said McCune. “We both distinguish ourselves by addressing the person who is interested in design. That has always been the North Star. "

In the case of the new organic websites, one of the goals is to help unfold users – whether individuals or large brands – become less dependent on a single social media platform. After all, he noted that when you build a following on Instagram, you're building on "borrowed territory" and "not really owning your audience."

By creating a simple profile that highlights the links of your choice and then linking your Instagram and other social profiles to your bio site, you can direct audiences to other channels that you have more control over – or at least diversify platforms , that you have. I rely on that.

McCune and his co-founder Alfonso Cobo aren't the first to think of this idea. For example, Linktree raised funds earlier this year, and there are other startups developing similar products. However, according to Cobo, Bio Sites will benefit from Unfold's design-driven approach that allows users to create simple profiles that are not only functional but also look good and reflect their personality.

Cobo also noted that bio-sites were created from the native app Unfold – it launches today on Android, with plans for iOS in January. The feature is available to all Unfold users, including free users. However, Unfold + and Unfold for Brands Premium Tier subscribers receive additional features such as custom URLs.

"We're really going to expand in the next few weeks with presence and expression tools that allow users to stand out in different ways," said Cobo. "We are also very interested in trading and will continue to explore this path in the future."
