The NFL has expanded their playoff field for the 2020 season, and that just means that there are more teams on the hunt in the final weeks of the season.

In the past 12 teams have made it into the NFL postseason, but for the first time in 2020, there will be 14 teams making the field for the Super Bowl. It's a move that adds two games to the full postseason, along with two markets whose season would otherwise have ended. In the end, it means more money for the National Football League.

An additional playoff spot in each conference gives hope for more fans in December. The patriots still have hope. So do the Cardinals and 49ers. And it means that a team will feel less difficult if it fails in favor of a not exactly convincing NFC East champion.

Here's what you need to know about the NFL's 2020 extended postseason, and how the teams are currently positioned in the field.

How many teams will make the NFL playoffs in 2020?

The 2020 NFL playoffs will feature a total of 14 teams, seven from the AFC and seven from the NFC. This is a new addition for the 2020 season, with each conference receiving three wildcard teams in addition to the four division winners.

The NFL expanded the playoffs before 2020 from the newest format of six teams in each conference. The larger field means no difference in the number of postseason rounds, but it does affect the number of byes. Instead of the two top seeds in each conference getting a reunion in the first round, only the top seed in each conference now switches directly to the divisional round.

The expansion meant the NFL would have two additional franchises as well as two additional games during the postseason. Adding extra things to the NFL schedule means more money for the league.

The NFL approved a contingency plan earlier this year to expand the playoffs to 16 teams if COVID-19 prevents the ability to play a meaningful game (which probably wouldn't mean even in a week 18 created). So it's an unlikely result, but one should be aware of whether the coronavirus will hit the NFL particularly hard as the holidays approach.
